Wake County
Wake County is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners meetings are held bi-monthly on Mondays and last approximately 2–3 hours. Wake County is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. The Board enacts policies such as establishment of the property tax rate, regulation of land use and zoning outside municipal jurisdictions, and adoption of the annual budget. The Board of Commissioners meet on the first and third Mondays of each month.

City of Raleigh
The City Council is Raleigh’s governing body, consisting of eight members who are elected for two-year terms. Three of the members, including the mayor, are elected at large, while the other members are elected from five districts. The City Council sets City policy, enacts laws and adopts the City budget each year.

State of North Carolina
The legislative arm of the state is the North Carolina General Assembly. They enact state-wide and local laws and establish rules and regulations governing the conduct of the people. Like the federal government and almost all the other states, North Carolina has a bicameral legislature, consisting of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The General Assembly meets in regular session (“Long Session”) beginning in January of each odd-numbered year, and adjourns to reconvene the following even-numbered year for a shorter session (“Short Session”).
